Bharathiar University Celebrates NSS Day with a Mega Cleaning Drive under the “Swachhata Hi Sewa 2024” Project
Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, in association with Vasudhaiva Kudambagam Social Welfare Trust, organized a grand celebration of NSS Day, marked by a Mega Cleaning Drive under the “Swachhata Hi Sewa 2024” campaign. The event, aimed at promoting cleanliness and community service, was held on September 28, 2024, at the Bharathiar University NSS Office Campus in Maruthamalai, Coimbatore.
The National Service Scheme (NSS), a Central Sector Scheme of the Government of India, aims to provide young students with hands-on experience in community service through various activities and programs. The celebration witnessed participation from 386 NSS volunteers representing 28 leading colleges in Coimbatore, including prominent institutions such as:

The event commenced with a welcome speech by Professor Dr. R. Annadurai, NSS Program Coordinator at Bharathiar University. He emphasized the importance of the Clean India Drive and encouraged volunteers to actively engage in nation-building through cleanliness and service. Following the speech, the volunteers marched to the Sri Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Maruthamalai and undertook the task of cleaning the entire temple premises, starting from the foothills to the top of the temple.
The volunteers’ dedication to the cause of cleanliness and their selfless service to the community were lauded by attendees. Vasudhaiva Kudambagam Social Welfare Trust, led by Founder President V.P.V. Yugka Murrthy, provided meals to all the volunteers. Koushik Ram Yugka Murrthy, Youth Wing President, also participated in the event, underscoring the trust’s commitment to engaging youth in social service.
In his address, President V.P.V. Yugka Murrthy announced plans for a series of similar cleaning drives at revered temples across Tamil Nadu, with the involvement of school and college students. The trust’s future initiatives will continue to support the Swachh Bharat mission, ensuring that sacred spaces are kept clean and maintained for the benefit of all.
The NSS Day Celebration and the Mega Cleaning Drive were a resounding success, reflecting the commitment of Bharathiar University, its students, and Vasudhaiva Kudambagam Social Welfare Trust towards creating a *cleaner, more vibrant India.
